Strategic Naval Exercise Draws Chinese Attention
Two People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy warships were observed southwest of Lubang Island in Mindoro province on Sunday, coinciding with the Philippines and India's inaugural joint naval exercises in the West Philippine Sea (WPS). The vessels were identified as a Luyang-class destroyer and a Jiankai-class multi-functional frigate based on their distinctive features.
Historic Maritime Cooperation
The two-day Maritime Cooperative Activity (MCA), scheduled for August 3-4, marks a significant milestone in naval cooperation between Manila and New Delhi. This development comes as the Philippines continues to strengthen its maritime security amid regional challenges, similar to how the country has been reinforcing its coastal infrastructure against natural disasters.
Naval Assets Deployed
The Philippine Navy deployed its premier vessels, including:
- BRP Jose Rizal (the country's first-ever frigate)
- BRP Miguel Malvar
The Indian Navy contributed three vessels:
- INS New Delhi (guided missile destroyer)
- INS Shakti (fleet tanker)
- INS Kiltan (anti-submarine corvette)
Exercise Components
The joint exercises, which demonstrate the Philippines' commitment to maritime security similar to its recent efforts in strengthening maritime border security, included:
- Replenishment at sea approach
- Rescue and assistance operations
- Air defense exercises
- Maneuvering exercises
- Anti-submarine warfare drills
Diplomatic Foundation
AFP Chief of Staff General Romeo Brawner Jr. revealed that this joint initiative emerged from strategic discussions with Indian Armed Forces Chief of Staff General Anir Chauhan during two key diplomatic events - the Raisina Dialogue 2025 in New Delhi and the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore. This partnership builds on the Philippines' broader strategy of enhancing maritime safety and preparedness in the region.
