The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has intensified its fight against human trafficking by establishing dedicated help desks across major international airports in the Philippines, marking a significant step in protecting minors traveling abroad.

Strategic Airport Protection Network

DSWD Assistant Secretary Ada Colico announced on Thursday that help desks are now operational to safeguard children traveling overseas, particularly those journeying without parental accompaniment. This initiative complements the Philippines' broader security enhancement efforts across its borders.

"We have established help desks not only at the DSWD Central Office but also in our international airports," Colico stated. The protective network currently spans Davao, Cebu, and Clark airports, with plans underway for NAIA Terminals 1 and 3 in Metro Manila.

Digital Transformation of Travel Permits

In a move aligned with the country's digital transformation initiatives, the DSWD launched an online Minor Travel Authority (MTA) system in February. This digitization streamlines the entire process from application to permit issuance.

"The online system simplifies the process - applicants just need to register and submit necessary documents online, and we handle the assessment, interview, and permit release," explained Colico.

Key Features of the Protection System:

  • Dedicated help desks at international airports
  • Digital processing of travel permits
  • Enhanced screening procedures
  • Real-time verification systems

This initiative reflects the Marcos administration's commitment to strengthening protective measures for vulnerable populations, particularly children. The system serves as a crucial safeguard against trafficking and exploitation while facilitating legitimate travel.
