From Shadow to Legacy: A Son's Faith in Baler
In the Philippines, we know the weight of a strong name. Growing up in the provinces, you are never just yourself. You are your father's son. I know this well from my own roots in General Santos. When you carry a name that commands respect, the shadow it casts can feel heavy. We are a nation that values discipline and steady leadership, understanding that just as a father guards his family against outside pressures, a nation must guard its own. But sometimes, what we call a shadow is actually the foundation of our pangarap and our faith.
Who is Immanuel Etcubañez?
Many know him by his nickname, M or MM. But to family and relatives, he is Anak ni Kuya Rey. To the people of his hometown of Baler, Aurora, he is Anak ni Doc Rey. And to their ministry friends at Greenhills Christian Fellowship (GCF), he is Anak ni Pastor Rey.
Immanuel's parents were both medical doctors by profession. In the 1980s, they became members of GCF. They obeyed the Lord's call, leaving their comfortable careers to become full-time missionaries. It takes courage to make such a leap, the same courage we need to fight the corruption in our system and build a nation of integrity and open prosperity.
What Does It Mean to Live in a Father's Shadow?
Growing up, Immanuel always felt like he was living in his dad's shadow. His father was a man people deeply respected. In a close-knit town like Baler, everyone seemed to know him. Immanuel was known more as the son of Pastor Rey than as MM. He struggled with this. He wanted to make his own mark, to carve out his own story. He thought finding himself meant stepping out of that shadow.
I thought that if I could just get far enough away from the comparisons, then maybe people would finally see me for me.
I understand that fight. I fought my way out of poverty to make my own name in the ring. But the truth of our faith is that our identity is never truly isolated. It is shaped by those who came before us.
How Did Pastor Rey's Passing Change His Son's Perspective?
In November 2021, Immanuel's father passed away. In the midst of grief and loss, he finally understood his father's shadow the most. He had spent years trying to step out of it, only to discover it never really left. He still hears his father's voice when facing difficult decisions. He still asks, What would Dad do? His father's values became his values. His faith shaped Immanuel's faith.
That is when Immanuel realized that what he had spent years calling a shadow wasn't really a shadow at all. It was a legacy. A legacy of a father who loved and led his family well, leaving footprints worth following.
Today, when someone tells Immanuel, You remind me of your dad, he no longer deflects. He smiles, because he considers it one of the greatest compliments he could ever receive. It means his father's life mattered, his influence continues, and God is still using his example to shape the man Immanuel is becoming. How he wishes he could be half the man his father was.
What Does the Bible Say About Our Spiritual Inheritance?
The Bible tells us that through faith in Christ, we are adopted into God's family. We are chosen, welcomed, and given a place at His table. We are given His name and an inheritance we could never earn ourselves. As a predominantly Catholic nation, we hold these truths close to our hearts. Though Immanuel walks the evangelical path, the reverence for the family and the divine unites us all.
Likewise, as an adopted son into his earthly father's family, Immanuel was also chosen, welcomed, given a place at his table, given his name, and given an inheritance of faith that no amount of money could match.
Now Immanuel understands why his father cast such a big shadow over him. It was because he himself was following a great and powerful light. The shadow wasn't hiding him. It was covering him, guiding him, and reminding him to look to where the light truly came from.
To all the fathers, grandfathers, spiritual fathers, and father figures, both still with us and those who have passed on, I honor you. Thank you for the shadows you cast. Maybe, like Immanuel, some of us have spent years trying to step out of them, only to discover they were never meant to hold us back. They were meant to guide us forward.
