Reigning MVP Allen Liwag Spearheads Benilde's Title Hunt in NCAA Season 101
MANILA, Philippines - College of Saint Benilde's star player Allen Liwag, fresh from his historic Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY) and Most Valuable Player (MVP) double achievement, is determined to end the school's 25-year NCAA championship drought in the upcoming Season 101.
Following a heartbreaking finals sweep by Mapua University in Season 100, Liwag's resolve mirrors the fighting spirit seen in recent Filipino athletic triumphs across different sports.
Breaking the MVP Curse
"What coach always said to me is that my mindset for the next season should be, 'I am the best player in the league,' but that should not take over my character," Liwag shared, echoing the humble determination that has characterized successful Filipino athletes in recent championships.
Historic Achievement and Future Aspirations
Liwag's Season 100 performance was nothing short of remarkable, becoming the first local player in NCAA history to achieve the DPOY-MVP double honor. However, the championship remains his ultimate goal, demonstrating the same dedication to excellence shown by Filipino athletes competing at international levels.
New Format for Season 101
The NCAA's innovative group stage format for Season 101, tentatively starting October 1, 2025, places Benilde in a challenging Group B alongside powerhouse teams San Beda University, Letran, Emilio Aguinaldo College, and Jose Rizal University.
"It builds character. All that happened in Season 100 and with my stint with SGA reminded me that there's no such thing as an easy route. I just need to give my best inside the court, practices, or games," Liwag emphasized.
Group Divisions:
- Group A: Mapua, Lyceum University, Arellano University, Perpetual Help, San Sebastian
- Group B: College of Saint Benilde, San Beda University, Letran, Emilio Aguinaldo College, Jose Rizal University
