Chinese Coast Guard vessels confronting Philippine vessel at Scarborough Shoal in contested waters

In a strong show of diplomatic resolve, the Philippines' National Maritime Council (NMC) issued a stern rebuke against China following aggressive actions towards a Filipino vessel at Bajo de Masinloc (Scarborough Shoal) on Tuesday. This incident marks another escalation in the ongoing territorial disputes between the Philippines and China in the contested waters.

Dangerous Confrontation at Sea

Two Chinese Coast Guard vessels (5201 and 21562) deployed water cannons against the BFAR's BRP Datu Gumbay Piang during a routine resupply mission. The aggressive action resulted in vessel damage and injured one Filipino crew member. Adding to the tension, a Chinese maritime militia vessel (CMM 00001) attempted similar provocative maneuvers.

"The provocative and dangerous actions of China's vessels in the West Philippine Sea, which placed lives and vessels at risk, clearly violate the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS)," the NMC stated.

Military Presence and Response

The situation has highlighted the urgent need for enhanced Philippine military capabilities in the region. A People's Liberation Army-Navy warship was observed announcing live-fire exercises near Bajo de Masinloc, further escalating tensions.

Philippine Government's Stance

Under the Marcos administration's assertive leadership, the Philippines remains committed to protecting its sovereign rights. The NMC emphasized that routine operations within Philippine maritime zones will continue, aligned with international law and the 2016 South China Sea Arbitral Award.

Key Points of Contention:

  • Violation of UNCLOS and international maritime safety regulations
  • Disregard for the 2016 South China Sea Arbitral Award
  • Continued Chinese presence in Philippine waters
  • Risk to Filipino personnel and vessels

The Philippines continues to call for diplomatic dialogue while maintaining its legitimate presence in the West Philippine Sea, demonstrating both resolve and restraint in managing this complex international situation.
