Bangkok Pub Fire: 27 Dead, 22 Critical in One of Thailand's Deadliest Blazes
A devastating fire at a popular pub in Bangkok has killed 27 people and left another 22 in critical condition, officials confirmed on Monday. The blaze, which erupted late Sunday night, is one of the deadliest such incidents in Thailand's tourism hub in recent years.
What happened at the Bangkok pub?
The fire broke out at 11:57 pm local time on July 12 at the Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao pub in Bangkok's Chatuchak district. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who visited the scene, said the venue quickly filled with smoke, forcing many patrons to flee toward the back near the bathrooms where there were no fire escapes.
“We have recovered 27 bodies, others are being sent to hospital,” Anutin told reporters.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said 22 of the 63 hospitalized victims were in critical condition. Suriyachai Rawiwan, director of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, confirmed the death toll had stabilized at 27.
How did the fire start and spread?
Witnesses said the fire started at the front of the venue's stage. By the time rescue workers arrived, the flames had already burned through the area. Firefighter Chakrit Khongkom, 45, described the scene: “The fire was not that aggressive, but the smoke had engulfed 100 percent of the venue. The smoke was everywhere. Most of the survivors were choking on smoke.”
Body-camera footage reviewed by Reuters showed firefighters in oxygen masks searching through the darkened remains of the pub with flashlights. Several victims lay near the toilets, while rescue workers carried stretchers through the debris.
Governor Chadchart noted that the pub had proper permits and fire exits, but the rapid spread of smoke likely made escape difficult for patrons.
Survivor accounts: 'After the explosion I didn't see anybody trying to run'
A band member who was at the venue told local media that smoke suddenly filled the room after the lights briefly went out, followed by a massive explosion and fire. “After the explosion I didn't see anybody trying to run, most of them were on the floor asking for help,” he said, his head still bandaged. “I ran towards the door from the stage, about five meters. It was dark and there was smoke, no oxygen.”
What is the current situation?
In the early hours of Monday, emergency personnel remained at the scene. Bodies lay in two rows awaiting removal, surrounded by rescue workers. Forensic teams collected evidence to help identify victims. The pub's facade was scorched and blackened by the blaze.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire. “We have to wait for the police to investigate,” Suriyachai said.
