Mindanao Youth Games: A New Dawn for Lanao del Norte
For years, Lanao del Norte was a name whispered with caution, a province etched in the national consciousness by conflict. But a new story is being written here, one of hope, hard work, and the unifying power of sports. This province is ready to show the Philippines a different face.
From March 17 to 21, 2027, Lanao del Norte will host the very first Mindanao Youth Games, a partnership with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC). It is a bold step, a declaration that this corner of Mindanao is not just open for business, but open for the future. And the centerpiece of this vision is nothing short of spectacular.
A World-Class Arena in the Heart of Mindanao
The 66-hectare Mindanao Civic Center Sports Complex is the engine of this transformation. It is not your typical provincial sports ground. We are talking about a FIFA-certified football pitch, a World Athletics-standard track and field oval, an Olympic-size swimming pool, and a gymnasium that can seat 5,000 people. There are dedicated venues for archery, tennis, combat sports, and weightlifting. And if that wasn't enough, a baseball-softball diamond, backed by the PSC and the Philippine Amateur Baseball Association, is already in the works.
PSC Chairman Patrick “Pato” Gregorio, who has been busy with preparations for the 2028 Asian Beach Games in Cebu, was visibly impressed. “I think you have the best sports facilities in the country. Maybe you don't realize it, but it is really world-class,” he said. Coming from a man who sees sports infrastructure across the nation, that is a statement that carries weight.
Sports as a Bridge to Peace and Prosperity
This is not just about building stadiums. This is about building a future. Governor Muhammad Khalid Dimaporo and Representative Imelda “Angging” Quibranza-Dimaporo see sports as the vehicle for lasting peace. It is a way to change the narrative, to attract investments, and to welcome visitors with open arms. The complex has already been chosen to host the 2028 Batang Pinoy and is being eyed for another Palarong Pambansa.
“People will realize that we don't only host events in Manila. We go outside Metro Manila, we go to the Visayas, we go to Mindanao. The focus is also to develop regional training centers,” Chairman Gregorio added. This is a clear signal that the government is serious about decentralizing sports development.
For the people of Lanao del Norte, this is personal. “This hosting is a dream that will become a reality for our province,” said Rep. Quibranza-Dimaporo. “I hope our countrymen will put our province on their bucket list. This is a land of beauty and bounty where you will find peace and warm, hospitable people.”
Building a Lasting Sports Ecosystem
The Mindanao Youth Games will gather the region's top athletes aged 18 and below across at least 12 sports. But the work does not stop when the games end. The PSC has already identified the Mindanao Civic Center as a future regional training center for football and baseball. The province is also investing in its people, having recently held the Lanao del Norte Sports and Youth Summit, where experts in coaching, sports psychology, marketing, and media shared their knowledge.
This is a comprehensive approach. It is not just about one event. It is about creating a culture of sports that will last for generations. As the countdown to March 2027 begins, Lanao del Norte is not just hosting a competition. It is showcasing a province reborn, where the sound of a starting gun is louder than the echoes of the past.
