Starmer Tells Zelensky: Ukraine Must Remain Priority Despite Iran War
LONDON — British Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday that "the focus must remain on Ukraine" despite the ongoing US-Israeli conflict with Iran, as Zelensky continues his diplomatic tour across European capitals.
The meeting at Downing Street followed Zelensky's visit to Paris last week and precedes his scheduled trip to Madrid on Wednesday, as Ukraine seeks to maintain international support while global attention shifts to the Middle East crisis.
Strategic Partnership Amid Global Tensions
The Ukrainian president's European tour comes as the four-year conflict with Russia faces potential overshadowing by the escalating Middle East situation. The United States has been pushing for peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow, but a third round of negotiations has stalled due to the Iran war, with no new date set for discussions.
"I think it's really important that we are clear that the focus must remain on Ukraine," Starmer declared. "There's obviously a conflict in Iran going on, in the Middle East, but we can't lose focus on what's going on in Ukraine and the need for our support."
During the visit, both leaders signed a significant defense partnership designed to leverage Ukraine's hard-earned anti-drone expertise. The agreement aims to "boost global defensive capability against the proliferation of low-cost, high-tech military hardware, including drones," according to Downing Street.
Ukrainian Expertise Goes Global
Addressing the UK Parliament, Zelensky revealed that 201 Ukrainian anti-drone military specialists are currently deployed in the Middle East, helping defend against Iranian-designed Shahed drones that have become a signature weapon in both conflicts.
"We do not want this terror of the Iranian regime against its neighbors to succeed," Zelensky told MPs during his 30-minute address, highlighting how Ukraine's painful experience with Russian drone attacks has created valuable defensive expertise.
Ukrainian teams are already operating in the UAE, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, with deployments to Kuwait underway and 34 additional experts ready for deployment.
Royal Support and NATO Coordination
The diplomatic visit included a private audience with King Charles at Buckingham Palace, reinforcing the strong bilateral relationship between the two nations.
"I thank His Majesty and the entire Royal Family for their unwavering support and solidarity with Ukraine," Zelensky wrote on social media following the meeting.
The Ukrainian leader also met with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte in London, continuing coordination efforts within the Western alliance.
The UK-Ukraine defense agreement includes £500,000 ($670,000) in funding for an "AI Centre of Excellence" to be integrated into the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence, combining Ukraine's battlefield experience with Britain's industrial capabilities.
As global crises multiply, Starmer's "unbreakable resolve" in supporting Ukraine reflects Western determination to maintain focus on multiple fronts, even as resources and attention face competing demands from the volatile Middle East situation.
