32 Filipino Artists Receive Prestigious Ani ng Dangal Awards for Global Excellence
The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) concluded National Arts Month with a grand celebration, honoring 32 outstanding Filipino artists at the 18th Ani ng Dangal Awards ceremony held at the Metropolitan Theater Ballroom on February 27, 2026.
The prestigious event, graced by First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, recognized Filipino artists who have brought honor to the Philippines through their exceptional achievements on the international stage. The ceremony embodied the theme "Art as a personal journey," celebrating the dedication and courage of artists who have shared Filipino culture with the world.
Celebrating Filipino Excellence Worldwide
"Ang tapang na iharap ang ating wika, ang ating imahen, ang ating kasaysayan, ang ating mga kuwento sa entablado ng mundo," declared NCCA Chair and Executive Director Eric Zerrudo during his speech. His words captured the essence of Filipino artistic courage in presenting our language, image, history, and stories on the global stage.
The awards ceremony highlighted the diversity of Filipino artistic talent across multiple disciplines, from traditional arts rooted in our provinces to contemporary expressions that resonate in international cities.
Recognition Across Artistic Disciplines
The 2026 Ani ng Dangal Awards recognized excellence across various artistic fields:
Architecture and Allied Arts saw five awardees honored for their outstanding international achievements, including William Ti, who received recognition for winning the World Architecture Festival (WAFX) 2021 Masterplan Category.
In Music, eight artists and groups were celebrated for their contributions to Filipino musical heritage and innovation on the global stage.
Cinema recognized three artists, while Dance honored seven awardees who have showcased Filipino movement and storytelling traditions worldwide.
The Design category celebrated two artists whose creative vision has earned international acclaim.
Art as Personal Journey
Cinema honoree Laurice Guillen delivered the acceptance speech on behalf of all awardees, emphasizing that artistic success stems from personal passion rather than calculated career planning.
"While we are here to celebrate the accolades we have received, I believe the true value of this occasion lies in sharing our individual struggles, our unique journeys and the philosophies we hold dear," Guillen reflected.
Her words resonated with the Filipino artistic spirit, acknowledging that creativity flourishes through authentic self-expression, mentorship, and perseverance through challenges.
Symbol of Filipino Artistic Heritage
The Ani ng Dangal trophy, a stylized sarimanok conceptualized by National Artist for Visual Arts Abdulmari Imao, represents Filipino artists' achievements on the global stage. The award's logo, resembling rice stalks, symbolizes the harvest of creativity, with seven grains representing the seven arts.
This recognition program serves as one of the culminating highlights of National Arts Month, celebrating how Filipino artists continue to honor our cultural heritage while engaging with contemporary global conversations.
The ceremony reinforced the Philippines' commitment to supporting artists who carry our stories, traditions, and innovations to international audiences, bridging our rich provincial heritage with urban contemporary expressions.
