Celebrity chef and content creator Tatung Sarthou accused police of inaction after burglars looted his rest house in Baras, Rizal, on September 25, 2026, making off with an estimated P4 million in stolen items and leaving the property badly damaged. Two police stations, he said, passed him back and forth while barangay tanods caught a suspect whom officers later released.
Sarthou, known professionally as Chef Tatung, aired his frustration in a report by Darlene Cay that aired on GMA Network's 24 Oras Weekend on Sunday, October 18, 2026. Footage from his staff showed the rest house in disarray, with shattered glass and belongings strewn across the floors. The chef had just left the country on October 13 to join Meat & Livestock Australia's Lambassador program, part of a 22-member international culinary delegation, according to Simpol.ph.
From One Station to Another
The break-in happened while nobody was at the property. Neighbors reported hearing glass shattering in the morning, and Sarthou's staff went to check immediately.
"'Yon nga, nagsimula na magnakaw. So immediately, 'di ba nanakawan ka, magre-report ka," he said. (Sure enough, a burglary had taken place. Naturally, when you get robbed, you report it.)
He filed reports with both the Baras and Antipolo police stations because the property sits on a boundary line between the two municipalities. Neither station acted, he said. Instead, officers asked him for a special power of attorney and property titles before they would proceed.
"'Yung area kasi namin hindi siya clear kung Antipolo or Baras. Nag-report kami sa dalawang station, Baras and Antipolo, pero walang action," Sarthou said.
Barangay officials in the area managed to apprehend a suspect on their own, he added, but the suspect walked free because police failed to take the follow-up steps needed to hold him.
"Helpless. Helpless kami."
The chef's sharpest words were reserved for the contrast between what citizens give the state and what the state gives back.
"'Pag gobyerno may kailangan sa atin, 'di ba, gumagawa tayo ng paraan? Pero 'pag ganiyan humihingi tayo ng tulong, helpless. Helpless kami," he said. (When the government needs something from us, we find ways to comply. But when we are the ones asking for help, we are helpless.)
It is a complaint that will ring familiar to many Filipinos outside the cities, where jurisdictional borders on the urban fringe often leave residents stranded between stations that each say the problem belongs to the other.
What the Baras Police Say
The Baras Municipal Police Station said its personnel responded to the scene right away but later determined that the property actually falls within Barangay San Jose in Antipolo City.
"An initial inquiry was conducted, and the complainant was guided on the proper procedures for documenting the incident and identifying the items allegedly lost or taken," the Baras MPS said in a statement.
"Subsequent information and property documents presented by the complainant indicated that the location of the reported incident fell within the territorial jurisdiction of Barangay San Jose, Antipolo City," it added.
The station said its officers explained to Sarthou that the case had to be filed with the Antipolo police instead.
Officers Relieved, NAPOLCOM Investigates
Baras MPS chief P/Maj. Baby Estrella and Antipolo police chief P/Lt. Col. Mark Henry Garcia both declined interviews for the GMA report, but each confirmed that the officers involved had been temporarily relieved from their posts pending an investigation.
The National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM) has opened its own inquiry into the handling of the case. Vice Chairperson and Executive Officer Atty. Ralph Calinisan did not mince words about the officers' conduct.
"Nakakapagtaka talaga eh. Hindi ito ang SOP ng pulis natin," Calinisan said. (It is truly baffling. This is not the standard operating procedure of our police.)
"Sabihin na natin na mayroong mas nakararapat na opisina na humawak ng usapin na 'yon, ano ba naman yung tulungan mo siya at dalhin sa tamang police office habang sinusubukang asistehan," he added. (Even assuming there is a more appropriate office to handle the case, what would it cost them to help him and direct him to the proper police station while assisting him?)
By the time the report aired, GMA News footage showed several officers back at Sarthou's rest house conducting follow-up operations.
A Test for Police Accountability
The case lands amid a wider push for accountability within the Philippine National Police. Just a week earlier, five Taguig police officers were relieved from duty after a viral video exposed an alleged "hulidap" incident involving a 24-year-old man, prompting the PNP chief to order a thorough investigation, according to the Daily Tribune. The relief of the Baras and Antipolo officers follows the same logic: pull the men out, then find out what happened.
Sarthou, for his part, said he understands the jurisdictional technicality. What he cannot accept is the absence of basic decency in how he was treated. He had hoped the two stations would coordinate with each other and show a trace of empathy rather than shuttling a robbery victim between offices.
For a province like Rizal, where rest houses and farm lots straddle municipal lines all along the Antipolo ridge, the lesson is blunt. A boundary on a map should never become a wall between a citizen and the police protection he is owed. The NAPOLCOM investigation will show whether the institution agrees.
